HBO Harry Potter series reaches $197 million in production costs

The upcoming HBO Harry Potter television series has incurred approximately $197.1 million (£147.4 million) in costs before completing even half of its filming process. Financial filings from Plum Jam Productions, an HBO subsidiary, reveal that the production is on track to potentially exceed the budgets of the most expensive original films in the franchise.

While the original eight-film series saw individual budgets ranging from $100 million to $250 million, the new episodic format and extensive location work are driving higher upfront expenditures. Significant costs have been attributed to infrastructure and visual effects provided by the British firm Framestore.

The series, which will adapt each book into a dedicated season, is scheduled to debut on HBO in late 2026. The first season will cover ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ and features a cast including Dominic McLaughlin, John Lithgow, and Janet McTeer. Although spending is high, the production may benefit from UK tax incentives that were not available during the original film productions.
