HBO CEO suggests The Last of Us may end with Season 3

HBO and Max Content CEO Casey Bloys has indicated that the third season of the television adaptation of 'The Last of Us' may serve as the series finale. During an interview with Deadline at an Emmys afterparty, Bloys stated, “I think [showrunner] Craig [Mazin] has planned it as the final season.”

While Bloys noted that final decisions rest with the showrunners, this suggests a potential shift from previous expectations. In May 2025, showrunner Craig Mazin had suggested that a fourth season might be necessary to fully conclude the narrative of the second video game.

The third season is scheduled to premiere in 2027. It is expected to focus on the character Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, and will continue the story following the events of the second season. Additionally, Neil Druckmann is stepping back from his creative roles as writer and director to focus on upcoming projects at Naughty Dog, such as 'Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.'
