Hans Zimmer to create original score for HBO's Harry Potter series

Hans Zimmer has confirmed that the musical score for the upcoming HBO 'Harry Potter' television series will depart significantly from the iconic themes composed by John Williams for the original film franchise. Zimmer, working alongside Kara Talve and Anže Rozman of Bleeding Fingers Music, stated his intention to establish a unique sonic identity rather than imitating Williams’ work, noting, “I can’t write like John Williams, but even if I could, I would try to stay away as far as possible and try to be original.”

The series, which is scheduled to debut on Christmas Day 2026, aims to be a faithful, long-form adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels. Each season will adapt one book, allowing for more depth and the inclusion of characters and plot points omitted from the films. HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys indicated that while the network aims for a compressed release schedule, a strict annual release is unlikely due to the massive production scale and the need to accommodate a young cast as they age.

Production is set to feature a new cast, including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron. The reboot is also introducing visual changes, such as redesigned Hogwarts and wand designs that align more closely with the descriptions found in the original books.
