HBO to develop ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ television sequel series
HBO has commissioned an eight-episode drama series that serves as a sequel to the 2018 film ‘Crazy Rich Asians’. The production is expected to begin in 2027 and will continue the story of Rachel Chu and Nick Young following the events of the original movie.
Several original cast members are confirmed to return, including Constance Wu as Rachel Chu, Henry Golding as Nick Young, Ronny Chieng as Eddie Cheng, and Michelle Yeoh in a recurring role as Eleanor Young. Adele Lim, co-writer of the original film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. The creative team also includes original author Kevin Kwan, director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
The series aims to explore the family dynamics, romantic conflicts, and social complexities of Singapore’s wealthiest families in greater depth. The original film, based on Kevin Kwan’s novels, was a significant cultural milestone for Asian representation in Hollywood, earning over $230 million globally.
