HBO's Lanterns series subverts Green Lantern lore

The HBO series ‘Lanterns’ has emerged as a successful fall television production, blending Green Lantern comic book lore with an investigative mystery set in rural America. Created by Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King, the show adapts the source material by challenging traditional superhero tropes.

A central theme and running joke in the series involves the concept of fearlessness. While comic book lore often dictates that a Green Lantern must be without fear to utilize their power ring, the show portrays the characters—Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner—engaging in juvenile exchanges regarding their fears, mocking the traditional notion of noble, fearless heroism.
