HC Davos signs Slovak defenseman Martin Gernát

HC Davos has signed Slovak defenseman Martin Gernát to a contract lasting through the end of the 2026/27 season. The move comes as a response to an injury sustained by 26-year-old defender Nico Gross, who suffered a partial medial collateral ligament tear in his knee. Gross is expected to be out for approximately six weeks, though the club stated that surgery is not required.

Gernát, 33, brings significant international experience to the team. He previously played 117 games in the Swiss National League for Lausanne HC and has spent the last three years with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the KHL. During his time in the KHL, he won consecutive Gagarin Cups in 2025 and 2026 and recorded the league's best plus/minus rating last season. He is also a 2022 Beijing Olympic bronze medalist.

Pending player licensing, Gernát could make his debut for HC Davos as early as this Friday in a game against the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers.
