HCA Healthcare nurses report safety concerns over AI scheduling tool

Nurses at HCA Healthcare, the largest hospital chain in the United States, are reporting significant disruptions caused by 'Timpani', an AI-driven scheduling tool co-developed with Palantir. The software was implemented across approximately 130 locations to optimize staffing through predictive algorithms and real-time data.

Staff members allege the system frequently ignores shift preferences, provides insufficient notice for changes, and creates erratic schedules that lead to exhaustion. Clinical staff have expressed concerns that the tool may compromise patient safety by resulting in understaffed shifts or a lack of experienced veteran nurses during critical periods, such as Sundays.

Workers report that the automated system often performs worse than previous manual scheduling methods, forcing nurses to spend excessive time trading shifts or appealing assignments. Some staff members have noted that the resulting burnout and scheduling inaccuracies are contributing to increased absenteeism and workplace frustration.
