HCLTech‑backed study finds AI value remains unproven for TMT firms
A research report titled “The Value Edge,” produced by Economist Enterprise and supported by HCLTech, surveyed more than 200 senior executives across the telecommunications, media, technology and semiconductor sectors in the United States and Europe. The study found that 91 percent of organisations say their AI investments are delivering results, yet only about one‑third can actually measure the business value created. Roughly 53 percent of TMT companies cannot demonstrate that AI is driving revenue, and only 17 percent report active governance of AI systems. The report also highlighted an execution gap: just 20 percent of firms have a defined strategy for AI upskilling or hiring, and many lack robust frameworks to assess AI’s commercial impact.
Separate analysis from Gartner presented at its Data & Analytics Summit showed that between 80 and 95 percent of organisations report limited financial return from AI, with poor use‑case selection and weak data strategy cited as primary failure points. Gartner’s FinOps framework recommends scoring AI use cases on feasibility and business value, placing asset‑predictive‑maintenance projects in the top‑right quadrant for funding.
