Quintana Roo tax chief Hector Contreras resigns after VIP NBA Finals appearance in New York

Héctor Contreras, the head of the Servicio de Administración Tributaria of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo (SATQ), was spotted in a VIP area of Madison Square Garden during the NBA Finals game between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. The footage showed him seated just below the podium where U.S. President Donald Trump was watching, in seats that sell for up to $20,000 on the secondary market.

Three days after the appearance, Contreras submitted his resignation, citing public service principles, transparency, and the need to avoid distractions for the administration. In his statement he described his attendance as a strictly personal matter. The resignation ends his tenure that began in September 2022, during which he oversaw tax collection and digitalization projects for the state.
