Héctor Rodríguez Pimentel releases book on 1994 Dominican political crisis

Héctor Rodríguez Pimentel has released a new book titled ‘Crisis de 1994: punto de inflexión en la política dominicana’ (Crisis of 1994: Turning Point in Dominican Politics). Drawing on his experience as a senator during that period, the work examines the political and electoral crisis following the 1994 presidential elections between Joaquín Balaguer and José Francisco Peña Gómez.

The book details the constitutional reforms that emerged from the crisis, including the introduction of the second-round electoral system, the establishment of the National Council of the Magistracy for judicial selection, the allowance of dual nationality, and the prohibition of immediate presidential reelection. Rodríguez Pimentel notes that while the creation of the National Council of the Magistracy helped reduce political influence in judicial appointments, further reforms are needed to ensure judicial independence.

In addition to this political work, journalist and writer Máximo Jiménez is set to release ‘Compositores de la Música Popular Dominicana’ (Composers of Dominican Popular Music). This publication explores the careers and discographies of over 50 national authors and will be presented at the Juan Lockward Café Teatro.
