HD Hyundai Chairman Jeong Ki-sun becomes second-largest shareholder after father gifts 3.5% stake

Jeong Mong-joon, director of the Asan Social Welfare Foundation, will transfer 2.8 million HD Hyundai common shares – roughly 3.5 % of the company – to his son Jeong Ki-sun on September 3. The gift raises Ki-sun’s holding from 6.12 % to 9.67 %, overtaking the National Pension Service’s 7.12 % stake and making him the second‑largest shareholder.

The transfer is part of a broader succession plan. Ki-sun aims to acquire an additional 6.69 % to become the largest individual shareholder, but faces hurdles such as pledged shares – about 54 % of his father’s holdings are collateral for loans totalling roughly 371 billion KRW – and a projected tax bill of around 6.6 trillion KRW for the full transfer. The gifted shares are valued at approximately 5.838 billion KRW based on the closing price before the transaction.
