HDMI 2.2 Ultra96 cables enter the supply chain
The consumer electronics market is transitioning to the HDMI 2.2 specification, with the first hardware compliant with the ‘Ultra96’ designation entering the supply chain. This new standard doubles the maximum throughput of previous-generation hardware from 48 gigabits per second to a ceiling of 96 gigabits per second.
Manufacturer Silkland is debuting its H96 Certified Ultra96 HDMI cables, with shipments scheduled to begin the week of October 5, 2026. The initial offerings include a 2-meter cable priced at approximately $33 and a 3-meter version at roughly $56. In Japan, ELECOM has announced plans to release its own certified Ultra96 cables in mid-November 2026.
The increased bandwidth, supported by advanced Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology, is designed to facilitate uncompressed video transmission, such as 4K at 240 Hertz or 8K at 60 Hertz with high bit depth. The standard also introduces the Latency Indication Protocol to help devices coordinate signal delays. While the technology provides a foundation for future displays and graphics cards, current mainstream devices like existing consoles and televisions do not yet utilize the full 96 Gbps capacity.
