He-Man's Masters of the Universe Disappoints with $54 Million Opening

The live‑action adaptation of the 1980s franchise, directed by Travis Knight and starring Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba and Jared Leto, opened in theaters on June 5. In its opening weekend it earned an estimated $54.3 million worldwide — $29.3 million in the United States and $25 million from other markets — far below expectations for a film with a production budget near $200 million, not counting marketing costs. By comparison, the comedy "Scary Movie" debuted with $105.5 million. Critics gave the movie a 67 % approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience scores were stronger at 88 %. Demographic data showed the opening‑week crowd was 66 % male and 40 % over 45 years old. Amazon MGM domestic distribution head Kevin Wilson remained optimistic, praising the cast and crew and saying the launch validates the studio’s broader distribution strategy. The modest performance raises questions about the viability of planned sequels or spin‑offs despite end‑credit hints at future characters such as She‑Ra.
