Head and neck cancer detection requires monitoring persistent symptoms

Head and neck cancers, which include tumors of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and salivary glands, present significant diagnostic challenges due to symptoms that often mimic less serious conditions. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), there are over 452,000 new cases of lip and oral cavity cancer and approximately 108,000 cases of oropharyngeal cancer diagnosed annually worldwide. Oropharyngeal cancer has seen a sustained increase in incidence, largely driven by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infections.

Key risk factors include tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and HPV infection. Medical specialists note that approximately 75 percent of patients present with these risk factors, and the disease is more frequent in men. Warning signs that should prompt medical consultation include mouth sores or ulcers that do not heal within two weeks, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, a lump in the neck, or chronic nasal congestion.

Early detection is critical for improving survival rates. In Mexico, approximately 20,000 new cases are recorded each year, with roughly 50 percent of patients diagnosed at an advanced stage when the tumor has spread to lymph nodes. Early-stage treatments typically involve surgery followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy, whereas advanced diagnoses significantly reduce survival probabilities.
