Headache prevalence and diagnosis in Germany
Headaches are among the most common health problems in Germany, affecting more than half of the population several times a year. Among children and adolescents, approximately one in four reports weekly complaints.
In observance of World Headache Day on September 5, experts from ARAG highlight the importance of accurate diagnosis, noting that medical professionals distinguish between roughly 200 different types of headaches, including tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches. Because causes can range from harmless triggers to serious conditions like high blood pressure or spinal issues, experts recommend that patients maintain a headache diary. This diary should track frequency, duration, intensity, and potential triggers such as stress, sleep patterns, diet, and medication to assist doctors in providing effective treatment.
Migraines are noted as particularly burdensome, with approximately 40 percent of Germans reporting migraine attacks several times a year.
