Headphone use linked to rising hearing loss in young people

The increasing use of headphones for work, exercise, and isolation is contributing to a rise in hearing loss among younger populations. While hearing impairment was historically linked to aging or heavy machinery exposure, medical professionals are now seeing younger patients with signs of deterioration previously seen in older adults.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that over 1 billion young people globally are at risk of preventable hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices. The damage occurs within the inner ear's cochlea, where microscopic hair cells convert sound vibrations into electrical impulses. Because these hair cells do not regenerate, prolonged exposure to high-intensity sound can cause irreversible cellular damage.
