Health advice for seniors: Managing leg weakness and knee health

For individuals over 60, maintaining a walking routine is beneficial, but certain physical changes can signal underlying health issues. Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Lien, Head of the Rehabilitation Department at Viet Duc Hospital, warns that leg function decline can increase the risk of falls, fractures, and loss of independence.

Key warning signs include frequent loss of balance, a sensation of ‘missing a step,’ or persistent pain, numbness, and cramping during movement. These symptoms may indicate spinal stenosis, severe knee osteoarthritis, or peripheral artery disease.

To combat muscle weakness caused by inactivity or osteoarthritis, experts recommend specific strengthening exercises for the thighs. These include isometric thigh contractions while lying down, straight leg raises, and seated knee extensions. These low-impact movements help activate the quadriceps and support joint function without placing excessive weight on the knees.
