Health advice on avoiding prolonged sitting after meals

Prolonged sedentary behavior immediately following meals can negatively impact blood sugar levels. After consuming carbohydrates, glucose enters the bloodstream, prompting the body to release insulin. When a person remains immobile for extended periods after eating, muscles do not actively utilize this glucose.

Research, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses from 2023 and 2026, indicates that light movement after meals—specifically walking—is more effective at managing postprandial glucose and insulin responses than remaining seated. Breaking up long periods of sitting with short bursts of activity can help improve metabolic responses.

Experts clarify that this does not require intense exercise or immediate standing. Instead, simple activities such as a gentle walk, washing dishes, or tidying up the table can provide the necessary movement to assist the body in glucose regulation.
