Health advice on food intolerances and watermelon rind nutrition

Medical experts warn against self-diagnosing food intolerances, such as gluten or lactose intolerance, based solely on digestive symptoms like bloating or pain. Dr. Julija Skirmantė from the Antėja family health center notes that these symptoms can stem from various conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, or even certain intestinal cancers. Eliminating food groups prematurely can lead to nutritional deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals and may complicate the diagnostic process for genetic conditions.

In nutritional news, watermelon rind is highlighted as a nutrient-dense part of the fruit often discarded. It contains significantly more fiber than the flesh—approximately 2 grams per 150 grams compared to 0.6 grams—as well as potassium, vitamin C, and folate. Dietitian Lauren Manaker notes that the rind's fiber supports digestive health, while the amino acid citrulline found in the rind may assist in lowering blood pressure. The rind can be utilized in various ways, including marinating, pan-frying, or adding to smoothies.
