Health advisory for BPH patients regarding seasonal cold medications

During seasonal transitions in South Korea, patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) should exercise caution when taking common cold medications. Certain ingredients found in multi-symptom or nasal decongestant cold medicines, such as decongestants and antihistamines, can increase tension around the prostate and bladder outlet or affect bladder contraction.

For men with existing BPH, these substances may trigger acute urinary retention, a condition where the bladder cannot empty despite the urge to urinate. This can cause severe abdominal pain and, if left untreated, may lead to urinary tract infections or diminished kidney function. Medical professionals advise BPH patients to consult healthcare providers regarding medication ingredients rather than self-medicating with over-the-counter cold remedies.
