Health advisory on caffeine consumption and digestive health

Health experts and recent studies highlight the potential negative impacts of certain beverages on digestion and sleep quality. Consuming specific drinks on an empty stomach can exacerbate gastrointestinal issues, particularly for those prone to acid reflux or stomach sensitivity. Key beverages to avoid on an empty stomach include coffee, due to its natural acids and caffeine content which can increase stomach acid production, citrus juices, which can cause heartburn, and carbonated drinks, which may lead to bloating and pressure.

Regarding sleep, research published in 'Sleep Medicine Reviews' suggests that caffeine consumption should be timed carefully to avoid insomnia. An Australian study indicates that consuming caffeine less than eight hours before bedtime can reduce total sleep duration by approximately 45 minutes and decrease sleep efficiency by 7%. To maintain sleep quality, individuals should ideally consume their last cup of coffee several hours before their intended sleep time, with energy drinks requiring even longer intervals due to higher caffeine concentrations.
