Health agencies launch targeted HIV and STI prevention initiatives

In Zimbabwe, the National AIDS Council (NAC) reports that sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Harare Province have declined to fewer than 2,000 cases per quarter, down from previous levels of 2,000 to 3,000. NAC Harare Province manager Adonijah Muzondiona attributed this decrease to targeted community-based prevention programmes and peer-led interventions aimed at young people. Despite the overall decline, adolescents and young women aged 15 to 24 continue to represent a disproportionate share of new infections.

In Nigeria, the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has launched the ‘Campus Action Committee on AIDS’ across 27 tertiary institutions. The initiative involves the creation of committees comprising lecturers and student representatives to intensify HIV prevention, awareness, and support services. The program aims to strengthen the state's HIV response by integrating campus-level structures with existing national and local government mechanisms.
