Health alerts: Ragweed pollen rises in Slovakia and medical communication risks identified

In Slovakia, the invasive plant Ambrosia artemisiifolia is causing significant issues for allergy sufferers. As an invasive species from North America, it thrives in fields, roadsides, and neglected areas, particularly in warmer southern regions but also appearing in central and northern basins. The Public Health Authority identifies it as a potent allergen, with pollen levels expected to rise throughout August.

Separately, medical research from the University of California San Diego suggests that physician communication can impact patient behavior. A study published in Nature Human Behaviours, involving over 9,000 participants, found that when doctors describe symptoms as ‘normal’, patients are actually less likely to seek medical treatment. This occurs across various conditions, including seasonal allergies, migraines, and menopause, as patients may interpret the term as a sign that intervention is unnecessary.
