Health anxiety and its physical symptoms
Health anxiety is a psychological condition characterized by an excessive and persistent fear of having a serious illness, even when medical evidence suggests otherwise. This anxiety can manifest as physical symptoms, such as headaches or rapid heartbeat, which individuals may then misinterpret as signs of severe disease, creating a cycle of fear and constant checking.
Clinical psychologist Dr. Kerin Schnak notes that behaviors often include frequent body checking, repetitive monitoring of vital signs like blood pressure, and continuous online searches for symptoms. Conversely, some individuals may avoid doctors entirely to escape potential confirmation of their fears.
To manage these symptoms, experts recommend several strategies: confronting catastrophic thinking by seeking logical explanations for sensations, limiting requests for reassurance from others, and engaging in physical activity to reduce tension. Sensory techniques, such as holding an ice cube, and specific breathing exercises are also suggested to calm the nervous system. If symptoms are severe or sudden, such as intense chest pain or difficulty breathing, immediate medical attention is required.
