Health anxiety presents challenges for emergency medical staff
Healthcare professionals in emergency departments face the complex challenge of managing patients with excessive health anxiety. Recent reviews indicate that health anxiety affects between 2.1% and 13.1% of the adult population and is linked to higher utilization of medical services.
María García Tovar, an emergency nurse and member of the Mental Health Working Group of the Spanish Society of Emergency and Urgent Medicine (SEMES), notes that anxiety and physical illness are not mutually exclusive; a patient can suffer from a serious pathology while simultaneously experiencing high anxiety levels.
Emergency nurses play a critical role in the initial clinical assessment. They evaluate the patient's general state, symptoms, medical history, vital signs, and potential warning signs to distinguish between urgent medical needs and anxiety-driven concerns, ensuring appropriate care priority is established according to protocol.
