Health authorities expand influenza vaccine access for children

Health authorities in New Zealand and the United Kingdom are taking steps to increase influenza vaccination rates among children.

In New Zealand, Pharmac has moved to provide funded flu vaccines for children aged 6 months to five years starting 1 September 2026. This decision follows a sharp rise in influenza cases among young children. The expansion makes approximately 260,000 children eligible for free vaccinations through pharmacies, general practices, and other providers. Additionally, starting in the 2027 season, the country will introduce new cell-based and adjuvanted vaccines to provide increased protection compared to previous egg-based options.

In Scotland, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is urging parents to utilize available vaccination opportunities for children and young people this winter. To increase accessibility, the health board is offering community clinics for pre-schoolers and school-based vaccinations for older pupils. Additional flexibility is being provided through weekend walk-in clinics at locations including Pollok Health Centre, Gorbals Health & Care Centre, and Parkhead Hub to accommodate busy family schedules.
