RSV surveillance and immunization programs reported in Uganda and Ireland
Health authorities in Ireland and Uganda have reported updates regarding Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). In Ireland, the Health Service Executive (HSE) has launched its annual immunization program for infants. The program offers free vaccinations to babies born between September 1, 2026, and February 28, 2027, via maternity hospitals, while those born between March 1 and August 31, 2026, can receive the shot through general practitioners. The HSE notes that immunization can prevent up to 80% of RSV-related hospitalizations.
In Uganda, respiratory surveillance data from the Makerere University Walter Reed Program identified two RSV infections among 45 specimens tested at four sentinel hospitals during the week of August 31 to September 6, 2026. One case was RSV type A and the other was RSV type B. These detections occurred alongside the global availability of new tools to prevent severe RSV disease.
Medical experts emphasize the importance of coordination between obstetric and pediatric clinicians. Effective communication ensures that maternal immunization is accounted for, which may determine whether an infant requires monoclonal antibody protection.
