Colombia Ministry of Health suspends contracts amid fiscal irregularities
Colombia's Ministry of Health and Social Protection has implemented an emergency plan to strengthen oversight of public funds following significant fiscal discrepancies. Minister Ana María Vesga reported a gap of approximately 2.9 trillion pesos between committed funds and actual disbursements. Additionally, the Comptroller General issued a negative accounting opinion for the 2025 fiscal year, citing deficiencies in internal fiscal controls and identifying 108 projects worth over 365 billion pesos that lacked budgetary registration.
As part of these measures, the Ministry has temporarily suspended new contracts, agreements, and extensions to ensure resources are directed toward essential medical services. The Ministry also filed a criminal complaint with the Attorney General's Office regarding audio recordings in which unauthorized individuals allegedly demanded 8% commissions in the name of the Minister and her team. The administration has maintained a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ regarding illegal intermediation and commission payments.
