Health authorities launch adolescent pregnancy prevention initiatives in Ecuador and Latin America

In observance of the Andean Week for the Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy, the Ministry of Public Health in Chimborazo, Ecuador, has launched a series of informative and cultural activities. These initiatives, supported by the Andean Health Organization, target youth in both urban and rural areas through events such as mass gatherings in Riobamba and planned outreach in Guano, Guamote, and Pallatanga.

On a broader scale, Latin America remains a critical region for adolescent reproductive health. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the region has the second-highest rate of unplanned early pregnancies globally. In Mexico, data indicates that approximately 5.2% of females aged 15 to 19 are mothers, with a significant number of births occurring in girls under the age of 15.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has also implemented awareness campaigns focused on helping adolescent mothers prevent recurrent unplanned pregnancies and build healthier futures, addressing the social, economic, and emotional consequences of early motherhood.
