Health authorities monitor mosquito activity in Belgium and the Netherlands

Health authorities in Belgium and the Netherlands are monitoring mosquito activity and related viral risks. In Melle, Belgium, the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp, Sciensano, and the local government are collaborating with the firm Anticimex to conduct door-to-door inspections. These measures aim to identify and treat breeding sites for the tiger mosquito, an invasive species from Asia that can potentially transmit viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and zika.

In the Netherlands, the RIVM has reported cases of West Nile virus in several provinces, including Utrecht and Noord-Brabant. As of early September, the virus had been detected in 18 people, resulting in three deaths, as well as in horses and birds. Despite these viral detections, overall mosquito nuisance in the Netherlands has been lower than the average from 2020 to 2025, likely due to extreme drought reducing available breeding sites.
