Health authorities respond to school-related illnesses in Reunion Island and Fontenilles

Health authorities have responded to separate medical incidents at primary schools in different regions.

In Saint-Denis, Reunion Island, a single case of invasive meningococcal disease has been confirmed involving a first-grade student at École Primaire de la Chaumière. The student received medical care following an illness on September 15, and officials state the child's health status is not currently a cause for immediate concern. The Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS) La Réunion is coordinating with local authorities to trace close contacts and mitigate transmission risks. Parents have been notified, and guidance has been sent to family doctors regarding potential preventive antibiotic therapy.

In Fontenilles, an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis has affected the Génibrat school group. Recent reports indicate approximately 60 out of 200 students have been absent due to digestive issues, with two children hospitalized for dehydration. While local authorities have ruled out food poisoning from the school canteen, the municipality has implemented increased hygiene precautions, including the use of disposable hand towels and additional sanitizing solutions. Water analysis has also been requested as a precaution.
