Health awareness initiatives focus on first aid and sepsis mortality

In preparation for World First Aid Day on September 12, 2026, organizations are emphasizing the critical importance of immediate medical response. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies initiated the day to highlight how first aid bridges the gap between an emergency and the arrival of professional medical services. In Germany, the German Red Cross and the Youth Red Cross are advocating for the integration of health and crisis competence into school curricula.

Separately, ahead of World Sepsis Day on September 13, 2026, medical institutions are addressing high mortality rates in Germany. Data from the Federal Association of Medical Technology indicates that over 230,000 sepsis cases and more than 85,000 deaths are recorded annually in the country. Experts suggest that between 15,000 and 20,000 of these deaths could be preventable. While sepsis mortality in Germany has risen by 10 percent between 1990 and 2019, other nations like Norway and Finland have seen decreases of over 20 percent. To combat this, new quality assurance procedures have been developed to improve inpatient care and early detection.
