Health benefits and nutritional value of apples
Apples offer numerous health benefits, including improved gut health, blood sugar regulation, and cardiovascular support. They are a rich source of fiber, specifically pectin, which promotes healthy digestion and supports beneficial gut bacteria. Consuming apples with the skin is recommended to maximize intake of cellulose and pectin.
Research indicates that the soluble fiber in apples can delay sugar absorption, helping to manage blood glucose levels and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. For those managing blood sugar, it is advised to consume no more than half a medium apple at a time and to eat them alongside vegetables before carbohydrates to prevent spikes. Additionally, apples contain antioxidants like polyphenols, carotenoids, and anthocyanins, which may reduce the risk of certain cancers and lower the incidence of stroke.
To maintain quality, apples should be stored in low temperatures around 0°C, such as in a kimchi refrigerator. Because they emit ethylene gas, they should be stored separately from other fruits unless the goal is to accelerate the ripening of items like kiwis or avocados.
