Health benefits and performance impacts of coffee consumption
Coffee and caffeine consumption offer various physiological benefits, particularly regarding physical performance and long-term health. In endurance sports like cycling, caffeine acts as an ergogenic aid by reducing the perception of effort and allowing athletes to maintain higher intensities for longer periods. Recommended dosages for performance typically range between 3 and 6 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight, though lower doses may also be effective.
Beyond athletics, moderate coffee consumption is linked to several health advantages. Research presented by the European Society of Cardiology suggests that drinking between half and three cups daily may be associated with a lower risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease death. Additionally, the antioxidants found in coffee, such as polyphenols, help combat free radicals. Regular consumption has also been linked to a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and certain liver conditions.
However, excessive intake can lead to adverse effects, including insomnia, tremors, heart rhythm alterations, anxiety, and headaches. Individuals with hypertension, high cholesterol, or migraines should monitor their intake carefully.
