Health benefits and skin care considerations for sea bathing
Spending time by the sea offers various physiological and psychological benefits, including relaxation and improved well-being through fresh air and mineral-rich water. Sea air contains salt particles that can aid relaxation, while sunlight exposure facilitates Vitamin D production, which is essential for bone health and the immune system.
However, certain health conditions require caution. Individuals with heart disease, asthma, respiratory issues, or skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema should consult a physician before using sea treatments. Additionally, sea bathing should not replace medical therapy for thyroid disorders, despite the presence of iodine in seawater.
To maintain skin health, it is recommended to rinse off with fresh water after swimming. Leaving salt, sand, algae, and microorganisms on the skin can lead to dryness, tightness, or irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. Dermatologists suggest rinsing and applying moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp. Avoiding prolonged wear of wet swimwear can also prevent irritation caused by friction and trapped moisture.
