Health benefits of essential oils and indoor plants

Research indicates that various essential oils and indoor plants can offer modest benefits for health and environment, though their effects are often overstated.

Essential oils such as rosemary have been linked to improved memory, mental alertness, and reduced nervous tension. A study in the ‘International Journal of Neuroscience’ involving 144 participants showed rosemary aromatherapy could enhance cognitive abilities. Additionally, lavender is frequently used to reduce tension and aid sleep, while cinnamon may help alleviate exhaustion and anxiety. Some oils also demonstrate antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Regarding indoor plants, while they can absorb small amounts of gases and trap some dust through their leaves, they are not a substitute for proper ventilation. To achieve air purification comparable to opening a window, a very large number of plants would be required. Popular choices like Sansevieria and Peace Lily are more effective at making spaces visually pleasant and connecting them with nature than acting as significant air purifiers.
