Health Canada warns of bacteria in unauthorized online peptides
Health Canada has issued a warning to consumers regarding unauthorized injectable peptides sold online after laboratory testing revealed the presence of three different types of harmful bacteria.
The agency seized more than 11,400 vials of these drugs from Shanghai ERP Peptide Biotechnology Co. Ltd. and two online retailers. The unauthorized products include Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, MOTS-C, NAD+, Retatrutide, Tesamorelin, and Tirzepatide.
Health Canada noted that these products are often marketed for weight loss, muscle growth, anti-aging, or wellness, but have not been assessed for safety, efficacy, or quality. Potential health risks include hormonal imbalance, mood swings, blood sugar imbalance, liver or kidney damage, blood clots, and the growth of cancerous tumors.
In addition to bacterial contamination, unauthorized drugs may contain incorrect amounts of active ingredients, unknown substances, heavy metals, or particles of glass and plastic. The agency is working with the Canada Border Services Agency to intercept unauthorized shipments and has requested that ERP Peptide immediately cease selling illegal products into Canada.
