Health challenges in Brazil: Lifestyle impacts breast cancer and rare disease diagnosis lags

Health experts in Brazil are highlighting the critical roles of lifestyle and diagnostic accessibility in managing major health conditions. Mastologist Wilson Garcia reports that approximately 90% of breast cancer cases are linked to lifestyle habits rather than heredity, noting that genetic factors account for only 5% to 10% of diagnoses. Key preventive measures include regular physical activity, breastfeeding, and healthy nutrition, which can reduce cancer incidence by 35%. He also warned against the consumption of ultra-processed foods.

Separately, a national epidemiological study published in the Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases reveals significant challenges in diagnosing rare diseases in Brazil. The study shows that over 17% of patients in the survey remained without a definitive diagnosis, a rate more than double that of the United States and Australia. On average, patients waited more than five years from the onset of symptoms to receive a diagnosis. The research, conducted by the National Rare Disease Network (RARAS), points to a lack of genetic testing and specialized resources as primary obstacles.
