Health Coalition Aotearoa calls for lobbying reform and warns of gambling risks

Health Coalition Aotearoa is calling for increased transparency and regulation regarding commercial lobbying and the expansion of harmful industries in New Zealand. The coalition has highlighted that New Zealand received a zero rating from the OECD for its lack of policies to manage lobbying risks, noting that the country lags behind nations like Ireland, Australia, Canada, and France in establishing accountability measures.

In addition to addressing tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy food, the coalition has formally added gambling to its list of major commercial drivers of preventable harm. This follows the development of legislation that could allow up to 15 regulated online casino licenses. The coalition warns that the growth of online gambling may exacerbate poverty, financial stress, and health inequities, particularly among Māori and Pacific communities, arguing that the commercial environment and accessibility of gambling should be treated as a public health issue.
