Health concerns regarding polypharmacy and shingles risks
Medical discussions highlight two significant health concerns: the complexities of polypharmacy in the elderly and the risks associated with shingles (herpes zoster).
Polypharmacy, generally defined by experts as the regular use of four or more medications, presents challenges for older adults managing chronic conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. The management of multiple prescriptions involves risks regarding drug interactions, correct timing, and administration instructions, which can lead to further health complications.
Regarding shingles, the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV), which affects over 90% of the global population, can reactivate due to aging or weakened immunity. Beyond skin rashes, shingles can impact the nervous system, leading to complications like postherpetic neuralgia, where pain persists for months or years. In some cases, known as ‘zoster sine herpete’, neurological symptoms occur without visible skin eruptions. Severe complications may include encephalitis or damage to the eyes and ears.
