Health concerns rise among Brazilian youth regarding hypertension and anxiety
Recent studies in Brazil highlight growing health challenges among children and young adults. A survey by the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, involving over 6,000 students in Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, and São Paulo, found that 28.3% of participants had blood pressure levels consistent with hypertension, while 11.6% were classified as pre-hypertensive.
The study noted a strong correlation between high blood pressure and obesity. Among obese adolescents aged 15 to 18, the percentage of those with hypertension reached 60.5%. Contributing factors included sedentary lifestyles, with 59% of students spending more than three hours a day on screens and 66% engaging in only one to two hours of physical activity per week.
Separately, research from the Federal University of São Paulo involving 3,000 individuals aged 18 to 25 reported a 40% increase in anxiety levels following the COVID-19 pandemic. Identified drivers for this mental health trend include intense social media use, academic performance pressure, and a lack of adequate emotional support during adolescence.
