Health crises emerge in Chad and Senegal

Chad is facing its second-largest dengue epidemic on record, with dozens of deaths reported and approximately 3,000 suspected or confirmed cases across six provinces. Health authorities have launched spraying operations to contain the virus, which is being exacerbated by drought, climate change, and the influx of Sudanese refugees in the eastern part of the country. In response, the Prime Minister convened an interministerial meeting to strengthen epidemiological surveillance, improve medical care, and intensify urban sanitation.

In Senegal, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has confirmed 422 cases of diphtheria across 13 regions and 60 health districts. The outbreak has resulted in 14 deaths. The most affected areas include Dakar with 56 cases, Kaolack with 54, and Diourbel with 47. Health officials remain vigilant as the highly contagious bacterial infection can lead to severe complications if not treated promptly.
