Health effects of air travel and cabin pressure
Air travel subjects the human body to significant physiological changes due to cabin pressure, lower oxygen levels, and dry air. Clinical anatomy expert Professor Adam Taylor explains that the body must rapidly adapt to these environmental shifts during ascent.
Common health issues reported during flights include dizziness or fainting, often caused by a combination of dehydration, low oxygen, and prolonged sitting. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend staying hydrated, limiting alcohol consumption, and walking periodically.
Other frequent discomforts include changes in taste perception due to dry air affecting the nose and mouth, as well as gastrointestinal issues like bloating caused by expanding air in the intestines as cabin pressure decreases. Additionally, rapid pressure changes during takeoff and landing can lead to ear discomfort if the ears fail to equalize pressure.
