Health expert warns of risks from pet bites and scratches

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Aslı Özer has issued warnings regarding the health risks associated with cat and dog bites and scratches. She emphasizes that the physical size of a wound is not a reliable indicator of danger, as microorganisms in an animal's mouth or claws can penetrate even small openings in the skin.

Key risks identified include rabies, tetanus, and cat scratch disease caused by the 'Bartonella henselae' bacterium. Symptoms to monitor include swelling of the lymph nodes, fever, fatigue, redness, and increased heat around the wound area. Dr. Özer notes that individuals with suppressed immune systems or chronic illnesses are at a higher risk of serious infection. Immediate first aid should involve washing the area thoroughly with soap and water.
