Health experts address toilet paper chemical risks and plumbing usage

Health experts state that toilet paper does not pose a significant general health risk, despite the detection of certain chemicals in some brands. While a 2023 study identified per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in 21 global brands, and research in Ghana found elevated levels of phthalates and other compounds, medical professionals note that exposure levels are minimal compared to food packaging or cleaning products.

Oncologist Amar Rewari of Luminis Health noted that while genital and anal skin is highly absorbent, the quantities found in consumer products are currently too low to be clearly linked to cancer. Dermatologists suggest that skin irritations are often mistaken for medical conditions like eczema and can frequently be resolved by switching to fragrance-free, unbleached options.

Regarding plumbing, the practice of flushing toilet paper depends heavily on local sanitation infrastructure. While paper is designed to disintegrate, issues such as poorly dimensioned pipes, insufficient water flow, or improper pipe inclination can lead to clogs. In many regions, using a trash bin remains the recommended practice to avoid plumbing obstructions.
