Health experts advise caution regarding daily garlic consumption
Medical experts advise that while garlic is a common seasoning containing bioactive compounds like allicin, it should not be used as a primary method for preventing or treating diseases. Dr. Dou Phan, Deputy Head of Clinical Nutrition at Peking University People's Hospital, notes that the antiviral effects of allicin observed in laboratory and animal studies have limited clinical evidence in humans.
Consuming excessive amounts of raw garlic can lead to gastrointestinal irritation, including stomach burning, heartburn, and abdominal pain, particularly in sensitive individuals or the elderly. Experts recommend using garlic primarily as a flavoring agent for meats, vegetables, or sauces rather than a medicinal supplement for immunity, cholesterol, or cancer prevention. Those with acid reflux or gastric ulcers are advised to reduce intake and prefer cooked garlic.
