Health experts advise diet changes for stomach health and elderly hydration
Gastroenterology specialist Prof. Dr. Resul Kahraman warns that modern diets high in salt, additives, trans fats and refined carbs increase stomach acid and can trigger gastritis, reflux, ulcers and even cancer, especially in young people. He recommends limiting packaged foods, keeping daily salt intake to about one teaspoon, avoiding excessive acidic beverages and foods, managing stress, regular light exercise and maintaining consistent sleep patterns. He also notes that Helicobacter pylori spreads easily in poor hygiene settings and can be eliminated with proper antibiotic treatment.
Internal Medicine specialist Uzm. Dr. Fatma Gülçin Özalp emphasizes that older adults are vulnerable to dehydration and malnutrition in summer heat. She advises regular fluid intake throughout the day—water, ayran or unsweetened compote—tailored to kidney or heart conditions, and a daily protein source such as eggs, dairy, fish or legumes to counter muscle loss. Light, easily digested meals with olive‑oil vegetables, yogurts, grilled meats and whole grains are recommended, along with water‑rich fruits and strict food‑safety practices to prevent food‑borne illness.
