Health experts advise nutritional breakfast changes to manage blood sugar and fatty liver

Medical experts are warning against common breakfast habits that contribute to high blood sugar, weight gain, and fatty liver disease. Nephrologist Hung Yung-hsiang criticizes popular options like iron plate noodles, describing them as high in oil, salt, and sugar while lacking essential protein and fiber. He recommends an ‘inverted triangle’ eating pattern, where breakfast is the most nutritious and substantial meal of the day.

Functional medicine expert Dr. Carlos Jaramillo warns that many perceived healthy foods, such as low-fat yogurt or processed cereal, can cause blood sugar spikes due to hidden sugars and refined carbohydrates. He advises prioritizing protein, healthy fats, and fiber to maintain stability. Similarly, gastroenterologist Chien Cheng-hung notes that replacing processed breakfasts with boiled eggs can aid in managing fatty liver. He emphasizes that the choline found in egg yolks is crucial for transporting triglycerides away from the liver.

To optimize morning nutrition, experts suggest incorporating complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes or oats, high-quality proteins such as eggs or Greek yogurt, and healthy fats like olive oil or nuts. Avoiding ultra-processed foods and eating in a calm, unhurried manner are also highlighted as key components of a healthy metabolic start to the day.
