Health experts advise on distinguishing causes of sudden back pain
Medical experts are highlighting the importance of distinguishing between various causes of sudden back pain, particularly for postmenopausal women and those experiencing acute injury.
For postmenopausal women, a decrease in estrogen can lead to lower bone density, increasing the risk of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. These fractures can occur even without significant trauma, such as from lifting objects or bending over. Symptoms may include sudden back pain, loss of height, or a stooped posture. Specialists recommend bone density tests and imaging like MRI to assess risk, especially for those with family history or low body weight.
In cases of acute pain, it is crucial to differentiate between a lumbar sprain and a herniated disc. A lumbar sprain typically involves muscle or ligament strain, causing stiffness and localized pain. In contrast, a herniated disc involves nerve irritation, which often results in pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates down the buttocks, thighs, and calves. While sprains are often managed with rest and physical therapy, disc issues may require more intensive non-surgical treatments such as injections.
