Health experts advise on post-meal habits and nighttime snacking
Health experts and researchers are highlighting the impact of post-meal habits on blood sugar and weight management. A systematic review published in the journal Sports Medicine in 2023 suggests that engaging in physical activity shortly after eating is more effective at reducing blood sugar spikes than exercising before meals. Experts, including those from the CDC, recommend a simple 10-minute walk after dinner to help muscles utilize glucose and stabilize blood sugar levels.
Regarding nighttime habits, nutritionists warn that consuming snacks within two hours of sleep can increase the risk of obesity. Research from the University of Bath and the University of Birmingham indicates that appetite often peaks in the evening due to hunger hormones and environmental factors, such as eating while watching television. To mitigate these risks, experts suggest consuming meals rich in protein and fiber to promote satiety and avoid activating the brain's reward system through high-sugar or high-fat snacks late at night.
